Slaughterhouse Five- Going to the real location where Kurt Vonnegut was held prisoner during the bombing of Dresden is a powerful experience. You have to book a tour to go into the actual cellar where they were during the bombing.
Kunsthofpassage- Five courtyards with unique designs by different artists.
Zwinger Palace- A building that was mostly destroyed during the bombings has been reconstructed, and it is an impressive structure. While there, I visited the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon , and discovered amazing globes, mirrors, clocks and automatons. The best part of the palace is to walk around and look at all the statues and fountains along with the Rococo architecture.
Lila Soße- If you only have time for one meal out in Dresden eat here! I was a little nervous about the food being served in Weck jars, only because sometimes gimmicks are used to mask the taste of mediocre food, but on the first bite my mind was put at ease. The food is the complete opposite of mediocre; it is fantastic! I started with a cold potato soup that was amazing. Next a fennel salad that was also amazing. I finished with a fish special that was, yep, amazing! I washed it all down with a crisp white wine recommended by the superb waiter. We dined outside in the courtyard (one from the Kunsthof passage), and it was a magical evening.
Augustiner an der Frauenkirche- It's located in a wonderful square perfect for people watching and eating spätzle.
Pfund's Dairy- Known as the most beautiful dairy shop in the world. Built in the 19th century, Pfund's Dairy is beautiful and it does have fantastic cheese from the region and milkshakes! They also have a little shop where you can find great items for souvenirs, like soap, chocolate, and cheese.
Ost-pol- A perfect dive-bar run by some young guys with good attitudes. It looks like a time capsule of a bar from the 60's. They are very smart to not have changed much, if anything in the bar. There is a good selection of local beer and they play good music.
Oswaldz- Great coffee in a cute and relaxing cafe.
Westin Bellevue Dresden- It's in a great location and is a comfortable hotel with good staff. The pool area looks like it's straight out of the 70's, so that was fun!
Read Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. It has even more meaning to read it while in the exact location that he was held as a POW.
