Hill of Witches- Klaipeda is a cool port town that I enjoyed a lot, but the main reason I came here was to bike along the Curonian Spit to the Hill of Witches near Juodkrante. The easiest way to do this is rent a bike at Du Ratai and take the ferry (The Old Ferry port (passengers and bicycles):
"Šiaurinis ragas" at Danės g. 1) across to Smiltyne, where there is a bike trail the entire way (about 13 miles). It's a fun ride through sand dunes (highest moving dunes in Europe) with the Baltic Sea on one side and a forest on the other side. I would recommend staying at least one night on the Curonian Spit. The Hill of Witches is an extraordinary sculpture gallery created in 1979 on original pagan ritual grounds. I loved it!
Central Post Office- A gorgeous neo-Gothic building with wonderful details on the inside.
Old Town/Dane River- Walk along the river and look at all the boats and unique architecture. It's also a town of many interesting sculptures. A fun one to find is the Juodasis Vaiduoklis or Black Ghost of Klaipeda.
Make sure you try the smoked fish they sell from stands along the river. We got some to-go and it was fantastic!
Herkus Kantas- This is my favorite establishment in Klaipeda. The food is simple but good. The beers are great and the bartender/owner is extra hospitable. They play fitting music, and the clientele is a mix of locals and tourists.
Momo Grill- They know what they are doing with food at this restaurant. Every dish was perfectly prepared, seasoned, and cooked. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the service is professional. The prices are pretty high for Lithuania, but the quality is there. My only wish would be that they put more of their own feel into the restaurant. It felt like I could have been in any major city in the states. It did not feel like I was in a cool port town of Lithuania.
Achtung Baby- They oysters are good here and they have a great selection of wine. The welcome was not very warm (meaning I had to ask if it was ok if I sit at the table, and if it was ok to order, because I just got blank stares). I'm not sure if that's because they are trying to be cool? You have to wonder why a restaurant in Klaipeda would have an attitude, or a restaurant anywhere really. It is a business that depends on customers. Maybe it was just bad timing. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here.
Zveju Baras- Great selection of local beers at a bar that reminds you you're in a port town. Ship captain atmosphere, but with a young twist to it. I believe it's been around since the 70's as a local watering hole. The bartender was friendly and was knowledgable about the beers.
Amber View Apartments- The location is perfect and it's a comfortable apartment with a lovely view.
